HVAC Contractor Insurance in Ohio

HVAC contractors carry a different mix of risk than most trades: expensive equipment moving between the shop and job sites, vans on the road all day, and installed systems that stay in a customer’s building for years. UPIC Commercial builds insurance programs for HVAC contractors across Cleveland, Akron, and Northeast Ohio, written around how your crews work.

Why HVAC Contractors Need More Than a Basic Policy

General liability pays for third-party injury and property damage. It does not pay to repair your own faulty installation, and it leaves your tools and equipment uncovered when they leave the shop. We review the policy language with you before you sign.

Coverage HVAC Contractors Typically Need

Where HVAC Claims Get Denied

Common surprises are the “your work” exclusion, pollution-related exclusions on general liability forms, and equipment that is covered at the shop but not in transit. Ask your agent to show you each exclusion by name. Subcontracted work adds its own gaps, covered in Your General Liability Policy Probably Doesn’t Cover Your Subcontractors.

Certificates and City Registration

Most cities in Northeast Ohio want a certificate of insurance and a bond before they will register you or release a permit, and HVAC contractors also attach their state license. We issue certificates the same day. See our city-by-city requirement guides and our page on COIs and bonds for contractors.

HVAC Contractor Insurance FAQ

Is my equipment covered when it is in my van?

Not by general liability or usually by commercial auto. Tools and equipment in transit are what inland marine coverage is for.

Will general liability pay for a system I installed wrong?

Generally not for the cost of fixing the installation itself. Damage the faulty work causes to someone else’s property may be covered.

Do I need a bond as well as insurance?

Many municipalities require both for registration. Requirements differ by city.

Can I get a certificate the same day?

Yes. We issue certificates the same day with the holder and endorsement wording your GC or city asks for.

Related coverage

Most HVAC contractors carry general liability alongside tools and equipment coverage for gauges, recovery machines, and rooftop units in transit, plus commercial auto for the service fleet. Permit and registration paperwork runs through certificates of insurance and bonds.
