Electrician Insurance in Ohio

An electrical contractor’s biggest exposure shows up after the job is finished. A panel upgrade passes inspection, you get paid, and months later a fire traces back to the wiring. UPIC Commercial builds insurance programs for electricians and electrical contractors across Cleveland, Akron, and Northeast Ohio, written around how the work is actually done.

Why Electricians Need More Than a Basic Policy

A standard general liability policy pays for damage you cause to other people’s property and for injuries to third parties. It does not pay to redo your own faulty work. That gap, and what sits on either side of it, is where electrical claims get contested. We read the policy language with you before you sign, not just the premium.

Coverage Electricians Typically Need

  • General Liability Insurance: The base policy. Ohio’s licensing board sets a minimum for licensed electrical contractors, and many GCs and cities ask for more. Confirm current limits with the board before you renew.
  • Completed operations coverage: Covers claims that surface after a job closes. Ask your agent to confirm it is included, not excluded to lower the premium.
  • Inland Marine and Tools Coverage: Meters, testers, wire pullers, and tools stored in a van or trailer fall outside general liability and commercial auto.
  • Commercial Auto Insurance: A personal auto policy can deny a claim tied to work use of the vehicle.
  • Contractor Business Owners Policy: Packages liability and property for smaller shops.
  • Umbrella and Excess Liability: Extra limits for larger commercial jobs and occupied multi-tenant buildings.

Where Electrical Claims Get Denied

The most common surprise is the “your work” exclusion: your policy will not pay to repair or replace your own defective installation. Some carriers offer faulty workmanship endorsements, and contractor errors and omissions coverage can respond to financial loss from mistakes. We walk through both in GL Exclusions Ohio Electricians Must Know. Subcontractor work raises its own questions, covered in Your General Liability Policy Probably Doesn’t Cover Your Subcontractors.

Certificates and City Registration

Most cities in Northeast Ohio want a certificate of insurance and a bond before they will register you or release a permit, and the wording differs by city. We issue certificates the same day and keep each city’s requirements on file. Start with our city-by-city requirement guides and our page on COIs and bonds for contractors.

Electrician Insurance FAQ

Does my general liability policy cover rewiring a job I did wrong?

Generally no. Ohio courts have treated defective workmanship as a business risk rather than an insurable accident under a standard commercial general liability policy. Damage the faulty work causes to someone else’s property may be covered. The cost of fixing the work itself usually is not.

Do I need completed operations coverage?

If any of your work stays in place after you leave, yes. Most claims against contractors arrive after the job is done.

Do I need a bond as well as insurance?

Many municipalities require both for registration. Requirements differ by city, so check the guide for the city you are working in.

Can I get a certificate the same day?

Yes. We issue certificates the same day with the holder and endorsement wording your GC or city asks for.

Related coverage

Most electrical contractors end up carrying some combination of general liability, tools and equipment coverage for what travels to the job site, and commercial auto once a van or truck is in the mix. When a city or a GC is asking for paperwork, that falls under certificates of insurance and bonds.
